In a meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, Pelosi said that when lawmakers passed the Taiwan Relations Act in 1979, the United States made a policy commitment to always stand by Taiwan. This act mandated the United States to assist in the island’s self-defense.
The country’s president thanked Pelosi for her “unwavering support” for Taiwan. He called the speaker of the US House of Representatives one of the island’s most “devoted friends”.
Tsai said, “Thank you for your strong support for Taiwan at this critical time and for the strong actions you have taken to inform the consistent policy of the United States in support of Taiwan’s self-defense.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Pelosi arrived in Taipei from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on a US military aircraft at 10:44 pm local time.
Tensions are running high between Washington and Beijing over Pelosi’s visit. China has warned that it will suffer “severe consequences” for this.
