On January 6, 2021, a committee was formed in the House of Representatives to investigate the attacks by Trump supporters on Capitol Hill. Congress has been hearing about this since last June.

The hearing was held yesterday for the eighth time. Like the other day’s hearing, the investigative panel presented the video testimony of Trump’s former aides and security personnel at the White House.

In the video deposition, witnesses said, Trump was inactive for 187 minutes (more than three hours) after giving a speech inciting the attacks to supporters. In other words, he did not take any action for 187 minutes after the attack started at his instigation. After that, in a video speech, Trump asked the supporters to go home.

During the deposition, former White House adviser Pat Cipollone was asked a series of questions by investigators about Trump’s role on the day of the incident. He was asked if Trump had called his defense secretary, attorney general or head of the Department of Homeland Security. Cipollone answered no to every question.

Elaine Luria, a Democratic member of the House of Representatives, said President Trump was sitting at his dining table and watching the attack on a television screen. His senior staff, close advisers and family members have been urging him (Trump) to take the steps expected of any US president.

A joint session of Congress convened on January 6, 2021 to confirm the victory of Joe Biden as President. Instigated by Trump, his supporters violently attacked the Congress building (Capitol Hill) to block the confirmation process. Some people including the police were killed.

At yesterday’s hearing, House of Representatives member Adam Kinzinger said Trump had no intention of stopping rioters. He said the attackers were serving Trump’s purpose. Naturally he did not interfere with it.

Kinzinger is one of the two Republican members of the investigative panel.
There will be another round of hearings against Trump in the House of Representatives in the Capitol Hill incident next September
