Some hard-line Iranian newspapers praised the attack on Salman Rushdie, the British novelist who won the Booker. After the publication of the famous novel ‘The Satanic Verses’, Rushdie received death threats from Iran since 1989.
The Iranian government did not respond to the attack on Friday. Salman Rushdie was attacked on the stage of the Shitokoya Institute in New York yesterday at 11:00 a.m. just before his speech began.

The radical Iranian newspaper Kayhan, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The newspaper described the man who attacked Salman Rushdie as ‘courageous and dutiful’. The newspaper also wrote, ‘He who breaks the neck of God’s enemy must be kissed.’

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called on the Muslim world to kill Rushdie in 1989, a year after the publication of The Satanic Verses. Khamenei’s Twitter account was suspended for a tweet in 2019. The tweet said Khomeini’s fatwa against Rushdie was “authentic and irrevocable”.
An Iranian religious organization announced a $2.7 million reward for implementing Khomeini’s fatwa. In 2012, the prize money was increased to 3.3 million dollars.
