Newshub18 :Covid is even more deadly during pregnancy, says an African study.
According to a new study of more than 1,300 women in sub-Saharan Africa, pregnant women are at higher risk of dying from serious health complications or Covid-19. Researchers argue that vaccination of pregnant women against Covid-19 should be a priority throughout Africa. Vaccination during pregnancy is not yet recommended in most countries. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases, analyzed the health records of 1,315 women who were treated in hospitals in six sub-Saharan African countries between March 2020 and March 2021 by Nachega of the Africa Health Research Network.
The consequences were serious. Pregnant women admitted to hospital in sub-Saharan Africa were five times more likely to die in hospital if they tested positive for covid. In addition, the chances of a woman being admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 due to pregnancy are doubled.
Pregnant women with COVID-19 who needed intensive care were at risk of serious complications. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. However, women who tested positive for HIV, TB, malaria or sickle cell were more likely to become ill.
Nachega hopes his findings will persuade sub-Saharan African policymakers to recommend vaccinating pregnant women and those who may be pregnant
