More than 180 people have died in floods in Afghanistan this month. In recent weeks, floods have caused widespread damage in the central and eastern parts of the country. The Taliban government has appealed to the international community for help in dealing with the situation.According to a Reuters report, the Taliban showed the casualties and damage caused by the floods last Thursday. The economic and humanitarian crisis of the country has been further accentuated by the devastating floods as many houses have been destroyed.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a press conference, “Afghanistan cannot deal with this flood alone.” We appeal to the world, the international community and Muslim countries for help. He said that 180 people have died in the flood this month. 250 people were injured. More than 3 thousand 100 houses were completely destroyed. Thousands of livestock have died. Afghanistan has been hit by several natural disasters this year, including drought. More than 1,000 people died in the June earthquake. The country was largely cut off from the international financial system after the Taliban took power a year ago.
Anne Kindrachak, UNICEF Afghanistan Central Region Head, visited the flood-affected areas. He said, “People have lost everything…they lose everything overnight.” This UNICEF official said that people are staying in three temporary camps. They suffer from uncertainty about what lies ahead—what they will eat this winter. Their livelihoods have been wiped out.
